Which plant need maps to which service?
In manufacturing the first job is splitting the network in two. Everything else is built on top of that.
Plant/office network separation
Line, machine and PLC devices moved into their own segment, with rule-based limits on contact with office traffic. Applied in stages, without stopping the plant.
Protecting unpatchable machines
Where machine workstations cannot be changed, they are isolated: internet access closed, communication restricted to what they need, USB use governed by rule.
ERP and production server
Server sized to current volume, virtualisation, protected power and connectivity between office and plant buildings.
Machine program and record backup
Multi-copy backup for NC files, tooling data and quality records. This data rarely changes, but its loss cannot be undone.

Frequently asked questions
Our machine workstation runs a very old Windows and the vendor will not allow updates. What now?
In manufacturing that is the rule rather than the exception. The correct move is not to update the machine but to isolate it: close its internet access, place it in its own network segment and allow it to talk only to the systems it needs. Risk drops substantially without touching the machine or its warranty.
Will separating the plant network stop the line?
Not when it is planned properly. Separation is normally staged: mapping and traffic observation first, then rules run in monitoring mode, and only then the cutover. Steps that require downtime are aligned to a planned shutdown.
When the line stops, who gets called?
The boundary is written into the maintenance agreement: electrical and mechanical stay with your maintenance team, computing, network and software stay with us. What removes the uncertainty is having that line drawn clearly — in practice the biggest time loss is the argument over whose problem it is.
The workshop is dusty and hardware fails often. Is there a fix?
Yes: hardware rated for the environment, enclosed and filtered cabinets, and cabling protected from vibration. A switch built for an office has a short life on a shop floor; specifying it correctly at the start is cheaper over time.
How should machine programs be backed up?
NC files and tooling data take little space but cannot be recreated, and in most plants they sit on a single machine. We move that data into its own backup set, keep at least one copy off site and test the restore.
How long should we keep quality and traceability records?
The period depends on your sector, your customer contracts and any quality certification — that part belongs to you and your quality function. Our job is making sure that, for whatever period is set, the records stay retrievable, readable and unaltered.
