What Is a Static IP, and Does Your Business Actually Need One?

TL;DR: A static IP means your internet address never changes. It is effectively mandatory for businesses with externally reached systems (a VPN head end, cameras, on-prem services), IP-restricted integrations or a self-hosted mail server; for a fully cloud-based office it is usually a needless line item. For domain-like needs, dynamic DNS and cloud gateways are the middle path — and if you do take a static IP, a firewall stops being negotiable.

Every internet connection has an identity number: the IP address. On standard subscriptions the provider assigns it from a pool and it changes from time to time — that is a dynamic IP. On some connection types — mobile especially, and some newer subscriptions — the provider carries multiple customers behind one public address: CGNAT. Your modem shows an IP, but the address is not yours alone and inbound access cannot be established.
